CaymanMama Travel Reporter Pat Takes You On a Virtual Tour To Undiscovered Vacation Destination in Mexico

If you are looking for an uncrowded place to enjoy spring break, think about the tiny, uncrowded island of Holbox (pronounced Olebosh). There is nothing much to do here except relax and swim along with harmless whale sharks--the largest known fish in the world.

Located off the north coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and northwest of Cancun, Isla Holbox is an island that is seven miles long and only one mile wide. The beaches are immaculate and the water is a beautiful, crystal clear, turquoise green. Sand roads serve only golfcarts, bikes, motorcycles and of course walking. Unlike the glitz of Cancun, there are no highrises on this island. There are no banks and no ATMs. Most businesses only accept pesos and dollars--no credit cards or travelers checks. If you like to fish, some of the best fishing in the region can be found here in the waters off Isla Holbox. This is where the currents from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean actually meet, producing great fishing conditions.

A growing number of Europeans and Americans have discovered this island paradise and a few boutique hotels, such as the 16-room CasaSandra Hotel, now cater to an increasing number of visitors that would like to come and enjoy the island. To get to Isla Holbox, you must drive about 3 hours from Cancun and then cross via ferry at Chiquila. Crossing time is approximately 25-30 minutes on the ferry.
