6 Killed in Northern Illinois University Shooting

The death toll has reached six in the shooting rampage that took place inside a lecture hall on the campus of Northern Illinois University on Thursday.

Described as a “skinny white guy with a stocking cap on” by a student who witnessed the carnage, the shooter was identified as a former student of NIU but was no longer enrolled at the school.

At least 18 people were hit by bullets fired from a shotgun and two pistols before the gunman turned one of his guns on himself and took his own life. Prior to his self-inflicted death the gunman opened fire on a classroom full of students in what appeared to be a calculated act. One student told WLS-TV, “It was almost like he knew who he wanted to shoot. He knew who and where he wanted to be firing at.”

By the time police arrived 29 seconds after the first call the shooting had already ended.

Three students had died inside the classroom while another two died shortly after arriving at Kishwaukee Community Hospital. As of Thursday night six patients remained in critical condition.
