Roger Federer began his quest for a second straight French Open title with an easy 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Peter Luczak at Roland Garros on Monday, inching him closer to a 17th career Grand Slam singles title.
Federer had his service game down as he collected points on 80% of his first serves put in play and a staggering 75% of his second offerings. The Swiss star also went the entire match without a double-fault and committed just 11 unforced errors and allowed Luczak a single break point opportunity, which he fought off.
Federer is coming off his fourth career Australian Open title and owns a career Grand Slam having won his first French Open title last year to go along with his five U.S. Open titles and six Wimbledon titles. Federer’s 16 Grand Slam singles titles are most of any male player.
