Businesses and Schools Reopen in Bangkok Following End to Violent Protests in Thai Capital

With the violent protests in Bangkok now over authorities in Thailand have allowed businesses and schools to re-open in the capital city but have kept a military presence to ensure order remains in place.

Bangkok, along with 23 provinces, have been under curfew for nearly a week and the military has recommended that curfew remain in place for another week while they try to silence the last pockets of red shirt protesters.

For more than two months Bangkok was the center of a violent protest between anti-government red shirts and Thai military. The red shirts have been demanding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva resign and call new elections. In a show of force the protesters stormed through Bangkok, overran government offices and set up camp inside the city but last week the government ordered military force to be used to end the siege and within hours the camps were destroyed.

More than 80 people were killed over the two month period of unrest but on Sunday the prime minister addressed the nation in a television broadcast saying “everything is calm and returning to normalcy.”
