Dirk Nowitzki To Become Free Agent

NBA Star to Opt out of Team's Contract

According to a report from ESPN.com, the Dallas Mavericks expect that Dirk Nowitzki will opt out of his contract next month and become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Nowitzki, who has been playing for the Mavericks since 1998, is the leading scorer in franchise history. It is understandable, then, that Dallas is trying to negotiate with the 7-foot German native on an extension that will keep this 9-time All-Star and 2007 NBA MVP on the only NBA team he's ever played for. Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks president of basketball operations, said, "We're going to do everything we possibly can to make sure Dirk is a Maverick for a long, long time," but sources have told ESPN.com that it is more likely that Nowitzki will choose the free-agent path.
