Serena Williams didn’t necessarily expect such a challenge to start her French Open tournament but after fighting her way through the first set the American was able to finish off Stefanie Voegele in more comfortable fashion, taking the match 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to advance at Roland Garros.
Serena hammered out 10 aces in the match but also had 22 unforced errors which kept Voegele in the match. The American put just 61% of her first serves in play but when she landed them she won 80% of those points.
Williams has achieved a career Grand Slam with five wins at the Australian Open (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), three titles at the U.S. Open (1999, 2002, 2008), three at Wimbledon (2002, 2003, 2009) and a French Open title (2002).
