The United States and South Korea have arranged to conduct joint naval exercises, a decision that comes on the heels of a recent report that blamed North Korea for the deadly sinking of a Southern warship in March.
According to that report North Korea fired a torpedo that struck the South Korean warship Cheonan, killing 46 sailors and sinking the ship. The report indicated that a wealth of evidence had been gathered to support the accusations against the North despite Pyongyang’s repeated denials.
On Monday it was announced by the Pentagon that the U.S. and South Korea would hold joint naval exercises “in the near future” with the findings of the recent report supporting this action.
South Korea has already said they would no longer accept “any provocative act by the North and will maintain a principle of proactive deterrence.” The decision to carry out military exercises is evidence the South plans to stay true to that pledge.
While the South has vowed “proactive deterrence” the North has warned retaliation for any action that is taken against the country. That could mean a response to the South’s decision to freeze trading with its neighbor as well as blocking any Northern ship from using South Korean waterways.
