Steve Fossett Declared Dead After Vanishing Five Months Ago

Steve Fossett, the first person to circle the world solo in a balloon, has been declared dead following his disappearance five months ago.

The 63-year-old adventurer had been flying a small plane from Yerington, NV en route to Bishop, Ca on Sept. 3 when he vanished. Family, friends and search and rescue teams scoured the areas between the flight path but never uncovered wreckage or any sign of Fossett.

On Friday is wife, Peggy V. Fossett, had her husband declared legally dead.

While Fossett made millions through his investments firm Marathon Securities it was his love for adventure and risk taking that made him a household name and earned him recognition the world over.

Along with his exploits piloting balloons, Fossett also gained fame for his accomplishments with airplanes as he became the first to man a solo flight around the world without stopping in 2005.
