Legendary Japanese film director Kon Ichikawa died on Wednesday after battling pneumonia. He was 92.
Ichikawa gained international fame for a pair of films in the 1950s that carried a strong antiwar slant. The 1956 film “The Burmese Harp” took the San Giorgio Prize at the Venice Film Festival and his 1959 film “Fires on the Plain” earned strong reviews for its graphic realism in detailing the hardships facing Japanese soldiers in WWII.
Over his 60 year career in film making Ichikawa collected 28 awards.
