Andy Roddick nearly saw his French Open end before it ever got started but the American managed to battle back, winning a fourth set tie-breaker and taking the fifth set to beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to advance at Roland Garros.
Roddick found himself evenly matched but it was his 19 aces and a paltry two double-faults that carried him past Nieminen. The American star won 80 percent of his first serves put in play and saw his serve broken just twice in the five set battle.
Roddick has one Grand Slam singles title, the 2003 U.S. Open, while he has reached three Wimbledon finals and the U.S. Open finals in 2006, all three finals losses came at the hands of Roger Federer. Roddick’s best finish at the Australian Open has been the semifinals, something he has accomplished four times, most recently last year where he fell to Federer. His best finish at the French Open was a fourth round appearance last year.
