Justine Henin is back on the surface that has brought her the most success and on Tuesday she got her French Open off to a solid start, dropping Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the second round at Roland Garros.
Henin wasn’t exactly sharp, struggling with her first serve as she put just 46 percent in play and committed four double-faults, but the Belgian collected points when she needed them most. She managed to break Pironkova’s serve on four of the seven opportunities she had while seeing her own serve broken just once.
Henin left competitive tennis in 2008 after winning seven Grand Slam singles titles. The 27-year-old Belgian won the Australian Open in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2004 and 2007, and the French Open in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007. She reached the finals at Wimbledon twice but fell to Venus Williams in 2001 and Amélie Mauresmo in 2006; both matches went three sets. She reached the finals at this year's Australian Open but fell to Serena Williams.
