The UN Security Council has voted to pull its existing troops out of Chad and the Central Republic of Africa despite warnings from Amnesty International that such a move would leave thousands of refugees in the area vulnerable to attacks.
Tuesday’s vote of the 15-member UN Security Council was unanimous, opting to pull the 4,375 existing troops out in stages by the end of 2010.
That security force was put in place in 2009 as a means of protecting displaced Chadians and refugees from Darfur but Chad has called the operation a failure.
While Chad has insisted the UN operation has done little to improve the situation Amnesty International condemned the Security Council’s decision saying “"It is wholly unacceptable that this resolution is taking place before the Chadian government has shown it has a concrete plan to provide security.”
