Opposition Leaders in Ethiopia Call for Rerun of Election Following PM Meles Zenawi’s Massive Win

While Sunday’s elections in Ethiopia produced a landslide victory for Prime Minister Meles Zenawi opposition leaders have demanded a rerun, claiming the voting process was flawed and failed to meet international standards.

Merera Gudina, head of the main opposition coalition, accused security forces of killing at least two party members while several election observers had been beaten and prevented from reaching polling stations.

Those criticisms have been backed by the EU and the US which both condemned the elections, pointing to numerous incidents of fraud and intimidation.

Despite the allegations Prime Minister Meles Zenawi remained confident in the outcome and warned international observers to respect the outcome, telling a crowd of supporters on Tuesday night “The people's vote will not be overturned by foreign forces.”

Heading into the election it was believed that Zenawi’s governing party would remain in power but winning 499 of the 536 seats declared so far is beyond anybody’s expectations.
