A record number of drinkers in England are being prescribed pills to help them conquer their addiction to alcohol. A report from the National Health Service Information Centre shows that hundreds of thousands of people are using medication to fight their alcohol dependency. This is raising concern in England that campaigns for sensible drinking are failing.
The campaigns, which used taxpayer money, included advice on safe daily alcohol limits and warnings to women about the impact of excessive drinking on their health. The report comes weeks before the World Cup which experts fear could become a focus for alcohol. A report has warned that excessive drinking during the World Cup could have a huge impact on business – employees with hangovers absent from work.
The National Health Service Information Centre report says that physicians in England issued more than 150,000 prescriptions last year for anti-alcohol drugs – a 12 percent increase in a year.
