It will take much more than some high-profile arrests to stamp out the growing problem of prescription abuse, but the Los Angeles County coroner's office is making an effort to go after any medical professionals suspected of providing powerful pain medication to those without legitimate health issues or prescriptions. The latest proof of this is their recent decision to subpoena medical records from 20 doctors in its investigation into actor Corey Haim's death, a coroner investigator said.
Corey Haim’s Death
Haim was a troubled child star with a long history of addiction who died in March 2010, but not before obtaining drugs using prescriptions written under the names of these doctors in the past year, according to Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Ed Winter.
California drug investigators found evidence that Haim, who fought a decades-long battle with drug abuse, used at least one fake prescription to obtain a narcotic in the months before he died. The coroner is still waiting for toxicology results to determine if drugs were involved in the death of the 1980s teen movie actor.
