BP has moved forward with what it is calling their “top kill” measure, pumping mud and cement into a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico in hopes that it will stem the flow of oil that has already poured millions of gallons into the water.
The “top kill” measure involves pumping mud into the breached well and relaxing the flow of oil, then pouring concrete on top of that to permanently seal the well.
Tony Hayward, CEO of BP, has said the chances of success with the “top kill” measure were between 60-70% but it could be a couple of days before they know if it has worked.
President Barack Obama continued to stand behind his administration’s commitment to solving the problem, saying “We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired and the clean-up is complete.”
It has been just over two months since tan explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig led to the well rupture in the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven oil workers were killed in the explosion and at least seven million gallons of oil have poured into the waters, destroying sea life and washing ashore along coastal towns.
