Beef Recall Involves 143 Million Pounds, Largest in U.S. History

After an undercover video depicting the almost unbelievable practices of a Southern California slaughterhouse made its way in front of the eyes of the world the U.S. Department of Agriculture has ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of ground beef.

The Westland/Hallmark Meat Co., based in Chino, CA, has been a major supplier of ground beef for the National School Lunch Program in more than 150 school districts and supplied ground beef to a pair of fast-food companies, Jack-in-the-Box and In-N-Out.

At the heart of the recall was the video shot by the Humane Society which gave evidence to cows to sick to even stand yet they were pulled across the floor by chains or shoved with a forklift into position for slaughter.

According to the USDA, Wesland/Hallmark Meat Co. failed to meet health regulations that stipulate a veterinarian must be contacted if cattle become immobile after passing an initial inspection.

The recall affects all beef products dating back to Feb. 1, 2006.
