The “top kill” measure being implemented by BP to stem the flow of oil from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico is proving effective as Coast Guard commander Admiral Thad Allen has said the move has “stabilized the wellhead.”
Allen was sure to say that it was still too early to call the recent developments a success; he did tell National Public Radio that BP had “been able to force mud down and not allow any hydrocarbons to come up.”
BP introduced the “top kill” measure on Wednesday, introducing the plan to pump mud into the well before pouring cement to permanently seal the leak.
For more than a month the ruptured well, caused by an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, has been pouring millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, destroying sea life and threatening coastal towns. According to the U.S. Geological Survey an estimated 12,000 to 19,000 barrels of oil were being poured into the water prior to the “top kill” measure being implemented.
