A 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook the Pacific Island of
Vanuatu early Friday morning, triggering a tsunami watch for the area.
The earthquake was located about 300 miles northwest of
the capital, Port Vila, and was 22 miles deep. There were no immediate reports
of damage or injuries.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami
warning for Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia. “An earthquake of
this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike
coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours,” the
center said in a bulletin.
