Juicycampus.com is a portal for college students to anonymously post gossip, spread rumors or post anything they want to say. The site's slogan is “Always anonymous. Always juicy,” and says its mission is “enabling online anonymous free speech on college campuses.”
The site was founded in August 2007 by Duke University grad Matt Ivester. “College students are clever and fun-loving, and we wanted to create a place where they could share their stories,” Ivester says of the site. JuicyCampus is now receiving backlash from students who are calling for the site to be banned.
Ivester adds that he believes “JuicyCampus can have a really positive impact on college campuses, as a place for both entertainment and free expression. Frankly, we’re surprised that any college administration would be against the free exchange of ideas.”
Students opposed to JuicyCampus have formed groups like “Ban Juicycampus!!!!” on Facebook. The group already has 850 members.
One example of a victim of the site is a junior at Cornell University who did not want to be identified. He said he received a text message from a friend telling him to check out the site. The student found his name next to a passage telling about his sex life. “I thought, ‘It this going to affect my job employment? It thins going to make people on campus look at me? Are people going to talk about me behind my back?’” he said.
College administrators say they have no control over the site because students can view JuicyCampus outside the college campus computer network. Students are urged not to post hateful gossip.
