The Narconon Day Celebration started with a bang Friday afternoon at Narconon of Georgia.
Narconon of Georgia, a non-traditional drug rehab, celebrated the founding of the Narconon program 42 years ago. The first Narconon was founded by William Benitez, who was an inmate at Arizona State Prison. After being a heroin addict who could not seem to get off of drugs using traditional forms of drug rehab treatment and being sentenced to prison, he had a realization that drug addiction had caused most of the problems in his life, including the current one. After reading many self-betterment books, he came upon one of which was titled "Fundamentals of Thought" by Mr. L. Ron Hubbard. Using some of the basic principles described in the book, he started practicing these and incorporating these into his life. He found himself responding favorably to his efforts and wrote the warden asking permission to start a small drug recovery program to help others. The success they had led to the creation of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program.
Since this humble beginning, Narconon has expanded to hundreds of centers and dozens of countries around the world.
Unlike typical drug rehab programs, this drug rehab teaches that while a drug addict may have become powerless to the effects of drug addiction, by proper body cleansing through the New Life Detoxification Program, which has been reported by those undergoing it to reduce or eliminate drug cravings, and by learning key life skills to enhance drug relapse prevention, drug addiction need not be a life-long struggle.
“I focus on making my life better, and increasing my prosperity in all areas of my life,” commented John, a former drug addict who graduated from the program over 2 years ago. “I never thought it would be possible, but after being a drug addict for 16 years, Narconon helped me get control of my life and I am a successful manager and a good father. My life is complete and drug free.”
Graduates from several states traveled to be part of the Narconon Day celebration. Mr. Gordon Weinand, one of the original graduates of the program in 1967, and currently working at Narconon of Georgia, was the host of the event. “It does my heart good to see the success that Narconon has had over the years,” commented Mr. Weinand. “Graduates go on to start their own businesses, go back to school, and live full lives. This would not have been possible without the Narconon program.” Narconon recently released a video in which Mr. Weinand describes the beginnings of the drug rehab program.
