Fidel Castro Resigns Cuban Presidency after Nearly 50 Years in Power

For nearly 50 years Fidel Castro has held the office of President in Cuba but on Sunday the 81-year-old will not accept a new term, rather he will turn hand over the reigns to his brother, Raul Catro, who became acting president during Fidel’s sickness in July 2006.

In a letter published in the online edition of Granma on Tuesday Castro wrote, “it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept a responsibility requiring more mobility and dedication than I am physically able to offer.”

Castro rose to power on New Year’s Day 1959 and has been the face of the Communist Party since.
