Key Parliamentary Victories Leads to Calls for Pervez Musharraf to Step Down as Pakistani President

Pervez Musharraf has already said he wasn’t going anywhere but backers of Nawaz Sharif and the slain Benazir Bhutto stepped up the call on Tuesday as their parties handed the President’s Pakastani party a crushing blow in the general elections.

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Q, the party of Musharraf, conceded defeat in the parliamentary election giving rise to the opposition parties who quickly called for the President to step down.

Musharraf has already stated that he would accept the outcome of the elections but remained adamant that he would remain in his presidency, a position he is to hold for five years, and expressed a willingness to work with the new government.

That working relationship could be difficult as the parliament could strip the president of much of his power.
