US Stock Markets Morning Wrap Up (HAL, BHI, NBR, MU, KR)

U.S. stocks fell Friday as investors were disappointed by data showing consumer spending was flat last month even as prices remained low.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 45 points, or 0.45%, to 10,214.02. The Nasdaq Composite declined 0.5% Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 0.5%, with the energy and materials sectors leading the drop on slumping commodities. Just two sectors managed to eke out gains: utilities and consumer staples.

Business activity in the U.S. expanded in May for an eighth straight month, a sign manufacturing has yet to be affected by the turmoil in financial markets.

 

Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL) plunged 5.11% to $25.61 and Baker Hughes Incorporated (NYSE:BHI) slumped 6% to $38.64 are the biggest percentage losers as the prospects for an offshore exploration moratorium hung over the sector in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

 

Nabors Industries Ltd. (NYSE:NBR) is the biggest percentage gainer and soared 5.40% to $19.38 with over 2.51 million shares. So far this year, the stock has plunged over 12.50%.

 

The stock is up 40% from its 52-week low and 29% off from its 52-week high.

 

Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) is another loser and slid 4.15% to $9.04. Micron Technology, Inc. is a global manufacturer and marketer of semiconductor devices, principally dynamic random access memory (DRAM) and Nandi Flash memory (NAND). In addition, the Company manufactures complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor products under a wafer foundry arrangement. The Company operates in two segments, Memory and Imaging.

 

The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR) is moving up by 2.40% to $20.32 with over 2.50 million shares. The Kroger Co., one of the country's largest grocery chains, has been quietly expanding its footprint in and around Richmond in a move to capture a larger chunk of the area's $3 billion in grocery spending.
