Nicole Street Taken Hostage at Gas Station

A high school student was taken hostage at an Oregon gas station on Saturday. Nicole Street, 16, said she went to a gas station to get gas and buy spark plugs. As she was parked at one of the pumps a man carrying a shotgun came towards her and demanded that she get out of her car.

“He told me he needed my help and he wouldn’t hurt me, but if I didn’t get out of the car, he would have to hurt me,” Street told a local paper.

The man, identified at 51-year-old Robert Earl Thompson, put and 12-gauge shotgun to Streets head and dragged her back and forth in front of the gas station while demanding $10 worth of gas.

Street said Thompson attempted to shoot her at one point but failed. He then ordered her to lie on the ground. The teen said she heard a gunshot and turned around to see that Thompson had been shot by Linn County sheriff’s sergeant Dave Lawler.

Thompson died of the gunshot wounds. The medical examiner did not say how many wounds Thompson sustained.

“I’m sorry that the officer had to shoot and kill someone to save me, but I’m also very grateful that he did save me,” said Street.
