Paul Wirth, the pastor of Relevant Church in Ybor City, Florida, announced a unusual challenge to members of his church Sunday, requesting that married couples engage in 30 days of sex, while singles practice 30 days of abstinence.
Wirth, whose Relevant Church is in a historical district in Tampa, said the challenge is aimed at bringing couples closer together. He told his congregation that half of all marriages end in divorce.
Wirth blames stress and long hours at work for the lack of intimacy in relationships. "And that's no different for people who attend church," he said. "Sometimes life gets in the way. Our jobs get in the way."
The Relevant Church has set up a blog, www.30daysexchallenge.com, for the members of his congregation to share their thoughts about the challenge.
