Lynyrd Skynyrd to Perform Live at Mellon Arena May 17

Lynyrd Skynyrd will be performing live at Mellon Arena at 7:00 pm on May 17.

A Southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd gained popularity in the 1970 with Ronnie Van Zant as the group’s lead vocalist and song writer. Zant tragically died in a plane crash in 1977 with guitar player Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines.

Basing the name on Leonard Skinner, a gym teacher at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd was a critically acclaimed southern rock group in the 1970’s and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006.

The band’s most popular songs include “Free Bird” and  Sweet Home Alabama” which are now considered to be American anthems and must haves for FM radio.

Previously the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, the Mellon Arena is commonly referred to as “The Igloo.”  The indoor arena located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League and used to house the Pittsburgh Hornets of the AHL, the Pittsburgh Rens of the ABL, the Pittsburgh Pipers and the Pittsburgh Condors of the ABA, the Pittsburgh CrosseFire of the NLL and the Pittsburgh Spirit of the MISL.

The facility accommodates 16,958 for ice hockey, with a standing room capacity of 17,132, and holds 56 luxury suties and 1, 696 club seats.
