Stocks Fall On Inflation and Credit Fears

Stocks in the US are extending early losses after the Consumer Price Index and the core rate of inflation rose more than expected, heightening fears in some corners that rising prices will give the Federal Reserve fewer options to deal with the slowing economy. Shares in Asia fell sharply after a division of KKR said it would delay debt repayments, which added to credit concerns, and Europe is under pressure. Elsewhere, a robust profit report and outlook from Hewlett-Packard is doing little to stem the rising tide of negative sentiment. Treasuries are lower following the disappointing inflation report.

The Labor Department reported a 0.4 percent increase in the consumer price index, and a 0.3 percent increase in the core consumer price index, which strips out energy and food prices. Both jumps were slightly higher than economists surveyed by Thomson Financial/IFR anticipated, and raised concerns that the Federal Reserve might hesitate to lower rates again to lift the flagging economy.

Housing market data bolstered the argument that the economy is far from recovery. The Commerce Department said that in January, housing starts rose by 0.8 percent, but only after plunging by a downwardly revised 14.8 percent in December. Building permits, a more forward-looking indicator, fell by 3 percent.

In mid-morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 87.36, or 0.71 percent, to 12,249.86.

Broader stock indicators also declined. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 11.58, or 0.86 percent, to 1,337.20, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 12.86, or 0.56 percent, to 2,293.34.

Bond prices showed little movement. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was flat at 3.87 percent late Tuesday.

The dollar was higher against most major currencies, while gold prices fell.

Light, sweet crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell $1.15 to $98.86 a barrel.

Today’s Hot Stocks to Watch:

AmMex Gold Mining Corp. (OTC BB: AMXG) is one of today’s SmallCapVoice.com’s hot stocks to watch.

AmMex Gold Mining Corp is pleased to announce that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to acquire 100% of the mining rights to the Cold Creek Gold Project, located in Cassia County, Idaho, near the Utah-Nevada border.

Historical drilling of the gold mineralization at Cold Creek delineated a non NI 43-101 compliant 85,000 ounce gold equivalent resource. It also indicated the presence of an open-ended deposit that requires additional drilling to fully define its ultimate size and extent, overall average grade, and potential mineability.

All Asia Licensing, Inc. (Pink Sheets: AASI) is another of today’s SmallCapVoice.com’s hot stocks to watch.

Smallcap Rapp(TM) will resume airing on Monday the 25th and will feature All Asia Licensing, Inc. next week. AASI announced last week that they have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Internet content filtering industry leader Netsweeper, the content filtering managed services company which holds the industry's most advanced proprietary global filtering and categorization service for corporations, public sector organizations, ISPs and OEM applications. The terms in the MOU will successfully bring Netsweeper's popular suite of Internet tools and technology into China. Smallcap Rapp(TM) has been retained by a third party to represent AASI.
