Techs Power Gains, Ahead of Economic Data

Stocks are trading to the upside, with techs leading the advance after Research in Motion upgraded its subscriber outlook and Citigroup lifted its recommendation for Cisco Systems. On the economic front, jobless claims matched expectations, while attention now shifts to the morning release of the Philly Fed's Business Activity Index and the Leading Index.

In early morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 66.59, or 0.54 percent, to 12,493.85.

Broader indexes also moved higher. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 6.51, or 0.48 percent, to 1,366.54, while the Nasdaq composite rose 24.25, or 1.04 percent, 2,351.35.

Bond prices moved higher. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 3.86 percent from 3.89 percent late Wednesday.

Light, sweet crude for April delivery fell $1.07 to $98.63 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Gold and platinum jumped to record highs overnight. The dollar dipped slightly against the euro and yen.
