An inmate was murdered in a New York prison yesterday evening. Larry Davis, who was serving 25 years to life on murder charges, was stabbed to death by another inmate during a recreation break at Shawangunk jail.
Davis gained notoriety in a 1986 shootout that wounded 6 New York police officers. The incident occurred when officers attempted to arrest Davis at his apartment for the murder of five drug dealers. He escaped trough a window, causing a 17 day manhunt.
He was eventually found at the home of one of his sisters. Davis went on trial for attempted murder and aggravated assault in the shootout case. At his trail he claimed that he acted in self defense as the officers were trying to kill him because he had information of police corruption. Davis was acquitted of the murder and assault charges but convicted on weapons charges.
Davis receives 25 years to life in a murder case that was not related to the shootout. Officials say the 41-year-old was stabbed to death yesterday around 7:30 pm with a home-made metal blade. He had stab wounds on his arms, head, back, chest and upper thighs.
A jail spokesman said that another inmate is being questioned in the killing.
