Wells, Nevada Hit Hardest By Earthquake

An earthquake shook northeastern Nevada as well as parts of Idaho and Utah this morning at 7:16. Wells, Nevada appears to have been hit the hardest as several buildings collapsed and small fires were reported throughout the city.

Elko County Commissioner said nobody was hurt but added that sidewalks cracked and windows burst. Wells mayor Rusty Tybo said many of the historic buildings were lost. “We lost some of the older historic buildings that weren’t structurally sound. We’ve had a water main break. Nearly every resident in town has experienced some kind of property damage – things off the walls, everything tipped over,” said Tybo.

Red Cross workers, firefighters, and police plan to go door to door to check on Wells residents. Residents whose homes were damaged are asked to put a white cloth on the antenna or dashboard of their car.

The 6.0 magnitude quake shook buildings in Salt Lake City, Utah and as far away as Twin Falls, Idaho. As many as 20 aftershocks were reported. No injuries or deaths have been reported yet.
