U.S. Embassy in Serbia Attacked by Rioters

A large group of rioters attacked the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia Thursday night in response to the recent declaration of independence by Kosovo.

The group broke into the embassy and set fire to building while chanting “Kosovo is Serbia” while thousands gathered outside the building. The embassy was closed at the time of the attack and no staff members were present when the siege began.

Earlier in the day a protest rally had been orchestrated in which Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica addressed more than 150,000 people with the line, “Kosovo is Serbia’s first name.” That rhetoric was met with wild applause and continued calls to block Kosovo’s declaration.

Shortly after the rally ended several Serbs took to the streets and focused their fury on the U.S. Embassy. Within moments there was footage of citizens entering the embassy and carrying out flags and setting them ablaze.

Riot police eventually forced the crowd to disperse after firing tear gas but the building sustained serious damage.
