Stephen Grant Gets 50 Years for Wife Tara Grant’s Murder

Stephen Grant, 38, was sentenced to serve at least 50 years in prison for the murder of his wife Tara Grant. A Michigan judge called Grant “demonic, manipulative, barbaric and dishonest” before the sentencing today.

Tara was choked to death by her husband before he cut up her body. He told police on February 14, 2007 that he had not seen his wife since February 9. Grant claimed they had an argument about her business trips overseas. On March 2, deputies searched the Grant’s home and found 34-year-old Tara’s torso in a container in the garage.

Grant fled the home in a neighbor’s truck. Police found him 200 miles away hiking at Wilderness State Park. He was wearing only pants, a shirt and socks in 14-degree weather. Grant confessed to killing his wife in a three hour recording while being treated for hypothermia and frostbite at a nearby hospital.

A jury found him guilty of second-degree murder in December. Prosecutors sought a sentence of 50 to 80 years while the defense sought 15 to 25 years.
