A ferryboat sank in the Amazon River on Thursday after colliding with a barge. The ferryboat was carrying 100 passenger and at least 10 of them are dead. Nine others are missing and believed to be dead. “The chances of finding them alive are remote. We will keep searching until the last body is found,” said state fire spokesman Lt. Clovis Araujo.
Araujo said the Almirante Monterio sank near the Brazilian town of Iacoatiara. 92 passengers were rescued by small boats and a “floating police station,” a 32 foot vessel that patrols the river. No one on the barge was hurt.
It is unclear what cause the collision but state public safety department spokesman Aguinaldo Rodrigues says the lunar eclipse cause visibility to be “very poor.”
