Stocks Are Lower As Investors Await Economic Data Due Next Week
Stocks fell Friday in early trading following losses racked up yesterday after an unexpectedly weak manufacturing report fanned fears that the economy may be weaker than previously expected. The mood remains cautious on Wall Street as investors await economic figures due next week on existing home sales and durable. In corporate news, Intuit topped the Street's profit estimate but lowered guidance, Express Scripts beat on the bottom line, Eli Lilly received fast-track approval for a new drug, and Huawei Technologies has given up on its deal to buy 3Com.

In midmorning trading, the Dow fell 46.65, or 0.38 percent, to 12,237.65.
Broader stock indicators slipped. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 6.25, or 0.47 percent, to 1,336.28, and the Nasdaq composite index slid 12.20, or 0.53 percent, to 2,287.58.
Light, sweet crude for April delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange rose 53 cents to $98.76 a barrel. The contract fell $1.47 on Thursday to settle at $98.23 a barrel.
