Following the violent attack on the U.S. embassy in Belgrade on Thursday evening the State Department has ordered nonessential diplomats and families of American personnel at the embassy to leave Serbia.
The decision to evacuate the diplomats and families comes just one day after Serbia held a massive rally in response to Kosovo’s recent declaration of independence. As the rally ended several rioters took to the Belgrade streets and set their eyes on the U.S. embassy.
Within moments the mob had stormed the building and set fire to the embassy causing severe damage.
U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Cameron Munter gave reason for why the exodus was ordered saying, “We are not sufficiently confident that they are safe here.”
