German President Horst Koehler Resigns Following Controversial Remarks Regarding Military Deployments

Germany’s President Horst Koehler has resigned from his office following a controversial remark he made regarding military deployments overseas being tied to the country’s economic interests.

Koehler made the comments during a radio interview following his visit to German troops in Afghanistan, at one point stating military deployments could be necessary “in order to defend our interests, for example free trade routes.”

While Koehler never specified his comments were directed at Germany’s involvement in Afghanistan many politicians jumped on the remarks and quickly tied the two together. Koehler’s office denied the link and said the president had been referring to anti-piracy measures being taken off the coast of Somalia but that failed to halt the criticism.

Koehler, 67, had been in the first year of his second five-year term. Stepping in as interim president will be speaker of the parliament’s upper house Jens Boehrnsen.
