After 49 years under the rule of Fidel Castro it appears almost certain that the Cuban people will have another Castro as their leader as the country’s lawmakers meet to select a successor on Sunday.
It has been less than a week since Fidel Castro relinquished his roll as president following a nearly two-year battle with his health. For the past 19-months Castro has allowed his brother, Raul Castro, to step in and lead and it is widely expected that he will assume the position absolutely when lawmakers select the new president.
The 76-year-old Raul Castro is the country’s first vice president and as such is the designated successor to his 81-year-old brother.
