Raul Castro Chosen to Succeed Fidel Castro

Raul Castro, 76, has been chosen to be Cuba’s new president by Cuba’s National Assembly. Raul will succeed his brother Fidel Castro, who has been president of Cuba since 1959.

The 81-year-old resigned from the position last month citing a “critical health condition.” He said “it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept a responsibility requiring more mobility and dedication than I am physically able to offer” in his resignation letter.

On Sunday, the 614 member National Assembly chose Raul, Cuba’s defense minister, to be president. Raul took over some of the president’s duties in 2006 when Fidel entered the hospital for intestinal surgery.

Fidel spoke out on Friday for the first time since his retirement saying, “I slept better than ever. My conscience was clear and I promised myself a vacation.”
