The only son of former ABC news anchor Ted Koppel has
died. Andrew Koppel, an attorney for NYC’s Housing Authority, was pronounced
dead early Tuesday morning after an apparent daylong drinking binge.
According to reports, Koppel was drinking at a bar when
he befriended a waiter, 32-year-old Russell Wimberly. The pair drank together
all day before heading to an apartment in Washington Heights around 11 p.m.
Wimberly and his roommate, Belinda Caban, found Koppel,
40, unconscious around 1:40 a.m. They called paramedics, who pronounced Koppel
dead at the scene.
"Someone called 911. A guy he was with. The call
came in at 1:40 a.m. that he was unconscious. He didn't respond, and he was
pronounced dead,” an NYPD spokesperson tells People magazine.
The cause of death has not been determined. Koppel, one
of 4 children, lived with his girlfriend and daughter in Queens.
Ted Koppel, the longtime anchor of ABC’s Nightline, has
not commented.
