American Airline Passenger Dies on Flight after Oxygen Tanks Empty

A woman traveling on an American Airline Flight 896 from Haiti to New York on Friday died after a flight attendant failed to provide the woman with oxygen despite numerous requests for help.

Carine Desir had complained that she was feeling ill and was having trouble breathing. She asked a flight attendant for oxygen but was refused twice. At that point Desir pled “don’t let me die” at which time other passengers began calling for assistance for the woman.

A portable oxygen tank was finally brought to the woman but proved to be empty. The flight attendant then retrieved a second tank but that too was empty. At that point a nurse on board the flight tried to administer CPR but that proved unsuccessful and the flight’s defibrillator was applied but that was not working properly.

Desir’s cousin, Antonio Oliver, asked that the plane be diverted to Miami so that she could be transported to a hospital but the 44-year-old woman was pronounced dead by a doctor on the flight.

Desir had been traveling with her brother and Oliver from Haiti back to Brooklyn, NY
