Al-Qaeda’s operational leader in Afghanistan, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, has reportedly been killed in a U.S. drone attack in a tribal area of Pakistan.
Yazid, also known as Sheikh Said al-Masri, was said to be al-Qaeda’s number three leader and was believed to have direct contact with Osama bin Laden. According to U.S. officials Yazid had a hand in everything from securing finances to planning operations.
Among the events that have been attributed to Yazid were the financing of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington as well as the bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
While reports of Yazid’s death have been made before this is the first time al-Qaeda has acknowledged the claims.
That drone attack is said to have killed not just Yazid but his wife, three daughters, his granddaughter as well as several other men, women, children.
