A photo of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) adorning traditional Somali garb was circulated on The Drudge Report Monday, causing a controversial stir.
Obama is seen wearing a turban and a wraparound white robe presented to him by elders in Wajir, in northeastern Kenya. Obama's estranged father is Kenyan.
The photograph was taken when Obama visited the country in 2006.
The gossip and news Web site The Drudge Report posted the photograph Monday and said it was being circulated by "Clinton staffers" and quoted an e-mail from an unidentified campaign aide.
Obama campaign manager David Plouffe immediately accused Clinton's campaign of "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election."
The Clinton campaign did not comment on the distribution of the photo, but campaign manager Maggie Williams said the Obama campaign's reaction was inflaming passions and distracting voters.
Many political figures have been seen wearing things that are outside of the realm of politics. Former New York City mayor and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani has dressed in drag several times for the sake of satire.
The connotation of Obama's Kenyan photo has an eery feeling of suggesting he is aligned with terrorism or the Muslim faith of some sort. Many Clinton supporters have also included Barack's middle name (which is Hussein, reminiscent of Iraq slain dictator) when they say his name.
