Robin Soderling stunned Rafael Nadal in last year’s French Open before falling to Roger Federer in the finals but on Tuesday he got his revenge as pulled off another shocker, ousting the world’s number one player in four sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals at Roland Garros.
It appeared as if Soderling would become just another Federer victim after a rough first set but the Swede bounced back, tuning the table on Federer in the second and then taking the momentum in a third set battle. Soderling then had no trouble holding serve in the fourth set as he was determined to prevent Federer from extending the match any further.
Soderling had never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam prior to the 2009 French Open where he eventually finished runner up to Roger Federer. He then reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2009, a personal best and then reached the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open the same year. Soderling is trying to get past his brutal 2010 Australian Open performance where he was bounced out in the first round.
