Francesca Schiavone, still in search of her first career Grand Slam singles title, took a huge step toward achieving that goal on Tuesday after knocking off Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals of the 2010 French open at Roland Garros.
Schiavone dominated Wozniacki, hammering out 25 winners compared to just ten for the Dane while collecting six break points on her eight opportunities. The Italian had little trouble with Wozniacki’s serve, grabbing points on 53 percent of her first serves and a staggering 77 percent of her second offerings.
Schiavone’s best showing at a Grand Slam prior to the 2010 French Open was a quarterfinals appearance at the 2009 Wimbledon as well as the 2003 U.S. Open. She reached the quarterfinals of the French Open back in 2001 but hadn’t made it past the fourth round since.
