Police Fend Off Bosnian Serb Rioters Attempting to Attack U.S. Consulate

A peaceful protest that amassed nearly 10,000 Serbs once again ended with a group of rioters targeting an American building as police were forced to use tear gas against a mob attempting to storm the U.S. Consulate in Banja Luka, Bosnia Herzegovina.

The protest had been organized to voice disapproval over Kosovo’s decision to declare independence from Serbia, a declaration that has led to wide-scale violence and demonstrations throughout the region.

On Tuesday a small group broke from the protest and began making its way towards the U.S. Consulate, breaking windows of local shops along the way. By the time they reached the U.S. Consulate they were met by police armed with tear gas and armored vehicles.

The rioters began throwing stones at the police but the officers returned with tear gas that quickly dispersed the crowd before any damage could be done to the building.
