Ferrum College on Lockdown, Classes Cancelled

Ferrum College has been put on lockdown after a “suspicious person” was seen on campus. Franklin County Sheriff’s Department says several officers are on campus looking for the man.

Ferrum authorities ordered the lockdown this morning around 8 am and sent students text messages saying there may be a “possible shooting.”

“In the best interest of the Ferrum College students, faculty and staff, we have put the college into a lockdown as a result of a possible situation on campus,” said a message posted on the school’s web site. “There have been no incidents or injuries. Authorities have been notified and are on campus and in control.”

Nearly two hours after the alert was issued, the school says “everyone is safe” but ordered everyone on campus to stay indoors while authorities continue searching for the man.

The campus is located outside Roanoke, Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
