Treasure Hunters Search For Nazi Gold and Amber Room

A pair of treasure hunters say they are searching for nearly 2 tons of Nazi gold and the whereabouts of the Amber Room. Heinz Peter Haustein, one of the hunters, says digging has resumed at a site in Deutschneudorf, Germany where he believed the treasures are located.

Christian Hanisch, the other hunter, said his father lead him to the site. Hanisch’s father was involved in hiding the gold and pieces of art after the Nazi’s realized they would lose World War II. According to Hanisch, his father left coordinates when he died and the coordinates lead to the site.

Digging was stopped over a week ago after authorities believed the area may be rigged with explosives or traps. A hollow area underground has been found, but it is unclear if it contains the gold or the Amber Room, which was taken from a Russian Castle during the war. The room is often referred to as “the eighth wonder of the world” because it is so majestic.

Parts of the room have been found but most of it is still missing. “I am certain that large parts of the Amber Room are buried somewhere here,” said Haustein.

Haustein says if the gold and Amber Room are found they would legally belong to Germany but he would advise that Germany return parts of the room to Russia.
