New York Summer Camp Lets Kids Get Out of the City

SuperCamp, a New York academic summer camp held upstate at Cornell University is a popular getaway among teens and pre-teens who live in the big cities of New York, Boston and Philadelphia.

Parents looking at New York summer camps that aren’t in the big city need only look upstate to Cornell University to find a unique academic summer camp in an idyllic setting.

Founded in 1865, Cornell's 745-acre campus is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State and sits on a hilltop overlooking 40-mile-long Cayuga Lake, the largest of the Finger Lakes. Creeks and waterfalls fill the gorges on two sides of the campus and one is never far from the sight and sound of falling water. This is an area of great natural beauty that intertwines and blends with the university's graceful quads and inspiring architecture.

This will be SuperCamp’s second summer at Cornell and based on the popularity of the camp in 2007, the expectation is that it will fill up fast in 2008. “Parents from all over the northeast, other parts of the U.S., Canada and even Europe enroll their kids in SuperCamp in Cornell,” says Chicka Elloy, Programs Director at SuperCamp. “They want the SuperCamp experience combined with the Ivy League setting of Cornell. It’s a great combination.”

The Cornell SuperCamp will offer two programs: the 10-day Junior Forum for students entering grades 6-8 in the fall and the 10-day Senior Forum for students entering grades 9-12. Each grade-specific program balances academics with fun activities such as a ropes course and features a dynamic, interactive learning environment that engages the kids and maximizes their long-term retention of the information provided.

SuperCamp also will hold a unique three-day summer camp for parents at Cornell. The program, called Parent Weekend, offers parents of SuperCamp campers a valuable insight into what their kids learn in their 10-day programs, enabling the parents to provide great support to their children throughout the school year.

Other SuperCamp locations this year include Stanford, Wake Forest, Drake, The Claremont Colleges, Cal State San Marcos, the University of Washington and Colorado College.
