After mounting pressure from humanitarian groups and church leaders the Cuban government has begun to relax its hard line stance against what they have labeled “mercenaries,” following through with a decision to relax the prison regime the dissidents have been living under.
While Cuban authorities still maintain the prisoners are mercenaries, agents of the U.S. government paid to undermine the island’s government, the families of the prisoners have insisted they are political prisoners.
Those families have been fighting for improved conditions for their jailed relatives, asking for them to be transferred to jails closer to their homes and receive proper medical attention.
The government has been facing added pressure since the death of Orlando Zapata in February. Zapata was the first activist to die of a hunger strike in Cuba in nearly 40 years.
Last month the Cuban government met with Church leaders and discussed the issue of prisoner transfers and medical attention. They also discussed ending the harassment of the group, the Ladies in White, an advocacy group made up of women and female relatives of the jailed prisoners.
